About Horsepower Units
Mechanical Horsepower (HP): The most common unit, equal to approximately 745.7 watts. Originally developed by James Watt to compare steam engine output to draft horses.
Metric Horsepower (PS): Used in Europe and some other regions, equal to exactly 735.5 watts (75 kgf·m/s). Slightly less than mechanical HP.
Electrical Horsepower: Used for electric motors, equal to exactly 746 watts.
Boiler Horsepower: Used for boiler power output, equal to 33,475 BTU/hr (approximately 9,809.5 watts).
Kilowatts (kW): The SI unit of power, where 1 kW ≈ 1.341 mechanical HP.
